I am an Associate Professor at the University of Vigo and a member of the Biological Oceanography Group.
I lead a multidisciplinary team that studies how the ocean works and why it matters, focusing on the two-way interactions between physics and biology.
We investigate how turbulence and nutrient supply shape microbial growth and community structure, and how these tiny organisms, in turn, regulate the cycling of carbon and nutrients in the ocean.
To explore these connections, we combine satellite observations, fieldwork, laboratory experiments, and computer models.
My main research interests include primary production, biological nitrogen fixation, the biological carbon pump, plankton ecology and biogeochemistry, and the effects of physical processes—such as turbulence and mixing—on the marine ecosystem.
I am also passionate about science communication and outreach, and deeply committed to mentoring the next generation of scientists.
